Russell Winfrey Vance, 89, of Joppa, Ala., formerly of Dyersburg, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at Cogburn Health and Rehabilitation in Huntsville, Ala. He was retired owner of Sanderfer Furniture Company, longest member of Dyersburg First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir since the age of 14, member of the American Legion, Country View Garden Club, Community College Orchestra, past president of Kiwanis Club, World War II Army veteran, and a retired captain with Tennessee Army National Guard. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Phillip Cook officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg. Curry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive visitors at noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Vance of Joppa, Ala.; a daughter, Kathy Eskridge and husband, Richard, of Joppa, Ala.; a sister, Jane Moon of Springfield; a brother, Owen Vance of Cordova; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra Oliver and Edna Harvey Vance. Pallbearers will be Michael Eskridge, Matthew Eskridge, James Vance, Owen Vance Jr., John Moon, Randy Digirolamo, Chuck Moody and Michael Pettigrew. Fleming Hodges, 87, of Dyersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. He was retired district attorney general for Dyer, Lake, Obion and Weakley counties and a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He was a 1939 graduate of Dyersburg High School and a 1942 graduate of Murray State College, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II; after his 26th mission, he was shot down and captured by German troops and spent more than six months as a prisoner of war. In 1947, he received his law degree at the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa, Leadership Fraternity and Phi Delta Phi. He was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1951 and to the state Senate in 1953. He was appointed to and served as assistant clerk to the Senate from 1955-1958 at which time he was elected district attorney general for Dyer, Lake, Obion and Weakley counties and served in that position until his retirement in 1979. He continued to practice law until 1995. He was an avid golfer and UT fan where he once served on the athletic board. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dyersburg with Father Gary Meade officiating. Curry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Peggy Hodges of Dyersburg; two daughters, Carol Miller and husband, Richard, of Loxley, Ala. and Lynn Smith and husband, Fred, of Knoxville; a son, John Hodges and wife, Polly, of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Fleming and Louise Tickle Hodges; and a sister, Annabelle Triplett. The family requests that any memorials be directed to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 108 King Ave. N, Dyersburg, TN 38024.

Charlotte A. Cook, 66, of Cordova, formerly of Dyersburg, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. She was officer manager for Cook Sales. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Curry Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Pilcher officiating. Memphis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive visitors at noon today at the funeral home. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, James "Jim" Cook; two daughters, Alicia Rumbarger of Memphis and Sonya Starnes of Drummonds; a son, James Thomas "Bubba" Cook of Bartlett; her mother, Doris Vaughn Harris of Dyersburg; two sisters, Tommie Sue Kindle and Su Ann Childress, both of Dyersburg; five grandchildren, Jared Hyder, Walter E. Hyder, Jason Starnes, Thomas Clinton Starnes and James Nathan Starnes; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas D. Vaughn.
