Oscar "Dick" Bruce, 83, of Dyersburg, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at his residence. He was retired as an elementary school principal for Dyersburg City School System, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II receiving three Purple Hearts in the battle of Iwo Jima, a minister and member of Millers Chapel Church of Christ for 53 years, and a member of the Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dyersburg Funeral Home with Bro. Alan Highers officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Kathleen Holt Smith, 90, of Finley died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at her daughter's residence. Kathleen was born Tuesday, January 21, 1919 in Finley to Charles Houston and Effie Thedford Holt. She lived in the Finley area her entire life and was a member of the Chic Church of God. The Smith family will have a private family visitation and funeral service for Mrs. Smith with Reverend Tommy Hughes and Reverend Calvin Smith conducting the service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dyersburg. Pallbearers will be Mike Faulk, Sammy Reed, Justin Reed, Joshua Reed, Don Smith II, and Charlie Cook. She is survived by one daughter, Janie Smith of Dyersburg; two sons, Don Allen Smith of Dyersburg and James Albert Smith of Finley; and two sisters, Mildred Guinnie McClain and Virginia Ruth Reed both of Michigan. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; and two special friends Janie Hilliard of Crockett Mills, TN and Pauline Morgan of Paris, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Smith; a daughter, Jean Cook; her parents, Charles Houston and Effie Thedford Holt; a sister, Clara Belle McClain; and, two brothers, Ben Holt and Mac Holt. Doris Vonell Leake Wells Riggs, 68, of Dyersburg, died Monday, October 12, 2009, at Jackson Regional Hospital, Jackson, TN. Doris was born Saturday, January 11, 1941 in Trenton, TN to Alene and Aubrey Leake. She was a member of The Main Street Church of Jesus Christ for 45 years. Her love of music led her to serving the Lord as a frequent soloist at the church. She was a former employee of Heckethorn Manufacturing Company, and, also served as a paralegal secretary for West Tennessee Legal Services. Doris graduated from Dyersburg State Community College with highest honors. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 5:00-8:00 pm at Curry Funeral Home. Funeral services for Doris will be at 1:00 pm Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ, 815 Main Avenue, Dyersburg, with Brother Mickey Dodd and Brother Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Brimm, Stan Watson, Ray Vestal, Wayne Vestal, Justin Davis, and Terry Vestal. Lynn Bizzle and Stephen Leake will serve as honorary pallbearers. She is survived by three daughters: Linda Paulette Davis and Niki Rose Brimm of Dyersburg and Karen Lee Curtis of Doniphan, MO; one son, Robert "Bubba" Wells of Dyersburg; one sister, Charlotte Bennett of DeBarry, FL; and three brothers: Aubrey Leake and wife Pauline, James L. Smith, and Steve Smith all of Dyersburg. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Allen "Smiley" Riggs and her parents: Aubrey "Toby" and Alene Taylor Leake.
