He was born July 3, 1931 in Rome, Ga. and served during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy and was the first service member to return to his home town of Lindale, Ga. He was a long-time Mason and member of the Al Chymia Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite. He served as a deacon in the Church of Christ before moving to Dyersburg. He retired after serving as plant manager for Alumax, a division of Alcoa.

Marvin Schultz, Jr., 62, of Dyersburg, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at his residence. Born August 10, 1955, he was the son of the late Marvin B. Schultz, Sr. (5/5/2001) and Florence Tipton Schultz (12/6/2015). Marvin was a farmer, cattleman, and a partner with Schultz Brothers Farms. He was a member of The Tennessee Cattleman Association and The American Soybean Association. Marvin was a fifth generation Dyer Countian, descended from the Light, Tipton, Thomas and OBryan families, all of which played prominent roles in the development of Dyersburg and Dyer County in the 19th century. He was a 1974 graduate of Dyersburg High School, and a 1979 graduate of The University of Tennessee where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Marvin was also a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Holy Angels Catholic Church officiated by Father Russ Harbaugh and Deacon Bill Winston with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. John was an electrical engineer for Osram Sylvania and also formerly worked at Union Carbide in Oak Ridge. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and a lifelong Methodist as a member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville.

Melondy Kay Myers, 46, of Dyersburg, lost her third battle with cancer on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. She was a loving mother to three children; Dustin Walls of Ripley, Jamie Walls of Dyersburg, Raven Dallas of Dyer. She was also a caring and nurturing grandmother (Gigi) to five beautiful grandchildren, Bryleigh Walls, Anzleigh Walls, Abigail Staggs, Noah Walls and Eva Qualls. She also leaves her mother, Dora McDonald of Dyersburg and one sister, Michelle Armstrong of Finley. Preceding her passing was her husband and best friend, Keith Myers of Friendship and father, Jimmy Booker of Ripley. Melondy was an employee of the Dyersburg State Gazette.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Jeff Hall. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Thomas Reasons, Jr., 73, of Dyersburg, died on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at his residence. He was born at the Baird Brewer General Hospital on Main Street in downtown Dyersburg on Easter Sunday morning, April 9, 1944 and was the son of the late Thomas Reasons, Sr. and Laura Odelle Pugh Reasons. Tommys roots were in Milltown in East Dyersburg on K.W. Avenue - a street that dead-ends on the south at the Cotton Mill where our dad spent most of his working life.

Tommy served as Dyer County Commission from Milltown District H for eight years and was on the budget, education, and law enforcement committees. He was also chairman of the E911 board when the new 911 building was built at the old fairgrounds on Harrell Avenue. He served on the Tri-County Solid Waste Board for 7 years. Tommy had a passion for politics, to say the least. And just two weeks ago, he picked up a petition for the upcoming 2018 election for Tennessee House of Representatives.

Bernice Edward Crain, 91 of Halls, farmer and former Lauderdale County Assessor of Property, passed from this life, Wednesday, January 18 after a long illness at his home. Mr. Crain was born September 6, 1926 in the Cedar Grove Community, Lauderdale County, TN. Mr. Crain was a World War II Army Veteran and served in Company I, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division during the Battle of Okinawa. His unit was transferred to Korea where they were responsible for taking down the Japanese colors and raising the American flag. He left the army as a Sergeant. Mr. Crain enjoyed many reunions over the years with members of his unit and was one of two surviving members of his unit prior to his death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Armour Crain, his parents, Roy and Lillie Mae Tillman Crain, and a brother, Lawson Crain. He is survived by brothers Floyd (Joann), Jerry, and Neal (Martha) Crain, one sister Mary Ann (Oliver) Voss, all of Ripley, and brother, Billy Crain of Halls, a stepdaughter Becky McWilliams of Halls, step grandchildren Barry (Linda), Monty (Jessica), Ricky Joe (Jenny) and step great-grandchildren Jeff, Blake, Molly, Lizzie and Ellie McWilliams. Mr. Crain grew up in the Flippin community and upon returning from World War II settled into farming. Not only did Mr. Crain farm himself, he served his community by working in various agriculture related professions and served on several agricultural boards. He was elected to serve as Lauderdale County Accessor of Property from 1972-1988. Services are set for Sunday, January 21 with visitation from 12:30-2:30 at Halls 1st United Methodist Church, funeral to follow at 2:30. Interment will take place at Ripley Memorial Gardens. Kenneth Jones, 63, of Dyersburg, died Thursday, January 18, 2018 at his residence. Born November 23, 1954, he was the son of the late Howard and Mary Owens Jones. Ken graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Memphis in 1972. He studied biology at Notre Dame, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Fisheries from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1978, and received his Master of Science in Wildlife Science from New Mexico State University in 1981. He was a retired associate professor of biology at Dyersburg State Community College, where he taught for twenty years. Upon retirement from Dyersburg State, he worked as a reporter for the Dyersburg State Gazette and was teaching part-time at the University of Tennessee at Martin.Ken was involved from 2003 thru 2009 with the Population Survey of the Interior Least Tern, a bird that was placed on the endangered species list in 1985. During this study, Ken traveled the Mississippi River documenting the Tern birds, while teaching about and sharing his love of the River. Ken was an avid outdoorsman and lover of all animals great and small. He will always be remembered as one of the great raconteurs of the area, always being able to entertain with a great story. He appeared often on stage in local theater productions and kept his harmonica handy to entertain friends and strangers. He was also well known in the area for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in many educational endeavors over the years. Ken was a member of First Christian Church and an active member of a Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Jeanne Holt of Dyersburg.

Born August 2, 1943, he was the son of the late Charles Alfred Finley, Sr. and Jane Weakley Finley. Mr. Finley attended Murray State University and the University of Tennessee. He was a farmer, cattleman, and landowner. Mr. Finley was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and had served in the the Air National Guard stationed in Memphis. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church conducted by Reverend Ed White with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.
